Chapter 14

Elise

M y legs were still shaking after all of that, but it didn't matter. I was holding his hands, looking at his face. I felt good. Amazing, in fact.

I sat up and took a deep breath. “I need to eat something.” I tickled his chest gently and grinned down at him.

He smiled back. “Me, too.”

He got out, picked up his boxers from the foot of the bed, slipped them on, and headed toward the old, small fridge in the dining area. I had seen it earlier, but I had no idea it would be stocked. But when he opened it, I saw it was nearly full of food such as pickles, sardines, sausages, and butter. There was a small box in the fridge, and when he opened it, he found a thick loaf of bread inside. He grabbed the bread and pointed it at me, laughing.

“Do you want to have your rock-hard bread in bed or there?” He motioned to the small dining table.

I got up from the bed and could see his eyes sweep over my body, already hungry for more.

Yes, look at me, baby. Let’s do it again after eating, I thought back.

I picked my pajamas off the floor and put them on, then I walked to the dining space and sat down on one of the small vinyl chairs. There was a beautiful view out of the window beside the table. Through it, the ocean looked so close that it almost felt like it might splash me whenever the ship moved.

Andrei walked back to the fridge and found a small plastic box on top of it with two plates inside. He grabbed the plates and two bottles of soda from the fridge and returned to the table.

“I hope you have good teeth,” he joked, cutting the bread with a small knife.

I smiled. “How long has it been in there?”

“Probably since the ship was built in the fifties, sweetheart.”

I laughed and winked at him. “Just how I love my food. Well, this is my first time being a sailor. Have you been on a ship before?”

“I have. Not for long though. Just to make a bit of cash. I was hired to do a few odd jobs, then bounce.”

Something told me to leave it at that.

He picked up two thick slices of bread and placed one on each of the plates. Then he spread a thick smear of butter and a few sardines on each of the slices and added a few cornichons to the side like a garnish. I watched him, wondering at how precisely he laid the food just so. Then he pushed one of the plates across the table toward me and opened both soda bottles.

I looked at his face as he picked up the slice of bread and started eating.

We both ate in silence for a little while, and I took another look out the window again.

“I guess you never got trapped with a mobster’s wife on a drug ship before?” I joked.

He started laughing.
